Dream Rain-forest Watering

Interactive installation

Individual Thesis Project

2023.3-2023.6

Dream Rain-forest Watering combines technology, motion tracking, and projection mapping to create a captivating experience. Participants simulate watering virtual plant in an artificial ecological environment, triggering growth and a soothing rain sound. The project aims to raise environmental awareness by symbolizing the importance of ecological protection. It also offers a moment of relaxation, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the visuals and sounds while contemplating the need to preserve our natural world.

INSPIRATION

Personal interest

I have a strong passion for travel and a deep love for nature. Road trips with friends to explore national forests and parks are a favorite. During my university years, I visited renowned forest parks in the U.S., finding solace and healing in nature. Sadly, plant extinction has accelerated in recent years.

Start From…

Upon returning to Shanghai, I shared my nature adventures, and my friends, tired of city life, expressed a longing for a break from work and crowded surroundings. Their desire to escape skyscrapers and experience the vast beauty of nature inspired me.

To allow people to intimately experience the wonders of nature and to create a sanctuary

Immersing themselves in the tranquil atmosphere of the installation

It is an invitation for individuals to slow down, appreciate the present moment, and develop a deeper connection with themselves and the environment.

Create a profound connection between participants and the natural world

Using motion-sensing technology, participants can engage in virtual activities such as watering plants

By combining the interactive elements with messages of conservation,

Engage and involve

Break away from the fast-paced rhythm of modern life and gain a deeper understanding of our existence.

Provides solace and inspiration

Foster an appreciation for the beauty and fragility of our natural world.

Promotes relaxation and introspection

Instill a balance within the lives of participants and encourage a more conscious and sustainable approach

The rain interaction is an element that can add a deeper meaning and experience to the entire production. By triggering rain sounds and effects, participants can create a more realistic and immersive environment through this interaction.

I utilized Photoshop to create deserved visual effect as modeling reference the rain and mist atmosphere, experimenting with perspectives to depict the animated growth state. Using branches and leaves, I pieced together the gradual lushness of the rainforest, capturing its evolving form.

Installation

The final presentation at UCSD was by Adam D. Kamil Galley.
I created a private space for the audience to immerse themselves in such an atmosphere by using displaced projections and plants. Additionally, I enhanced its aesthetics with the decoration of small table lamps.
